The Romney Tweed® Design Challenge

Since 2018 we have embarked on several initiatives involving local schools. We focus on spreading knowledge of weaving and the textiles industry, plus educate on the virtues of wool as a sustainable, homegrown material

Design Challenge 2023 -2024

Schools participating in this year's Design Challenge were: Brockhill Park Performing Arts College in Saltwood, Homewood School in Tenterden, Rye College in Rye and The Marsh Academy in New Romney

“An excellent piece of work all round.... The idea of creating designs based on a living landscape is a great process that a lot of schools would be excited by.”

Design Challenge 2019-2020

The Romney Tweed® Design (formerly Fashion) Challenge is a scheme involving local secondary schools for students in years 10 - 13. The aim of the programme is to offer a creative design challenge introducing young people to the fashion and textile industry.

In addition to opening their eyes to the UK fashion and textiles industry, a main aim of the challenge is to inspire a love for learning and the local environment among young people. The challenge motivates young people to work on a live brief with a commercial outcome, with the intention of giving them the opportunity to both write and speak publicly about their work and personal outlook.

By developing research and design skills, this builds the confidence and resourcefulness of students, which in turn raises aspirations. Ensuring that young people across Kent are included and have the best possible access to opportunities to learn, work and enjoy themselves is central to Romney Tweed’s charitable purposes.
